Many people don't know that there are three layers to lighting- task, ambient, and accent. All three of these lighting techniques can not only completely change the look of a home, it can strengthen the mood as well. A properly lit home can allow you to feel calm, safe, and relaxed. Light is not only an essential, but it can become a work of art when manipulated a certain way.
Task lighting is lighting with an actual task! Its job is to highlight a specific object or the focal point of an area. In a kitchen, for example, that spot would probably be an island or table if it is an eat in kitchen. In a living room, task lighting usually comes into play around a seating area.
Ambient lighting is just a fancy word for general lighting. It has no specific function, and does not target any special object in the room. It is simply there to allow you to see. Some examples of ambient lighting are ceiling mounted fixtures and recessed lighting.
Accent lighting is made to do just that- accent. This lighting is particular to art work in a room, or beautiful furniture. Accent lighting is sometimes used outdoors to light homes from the ground up, which can turn a house in the night into a beautifully lit humble abode.
Put these different types of lighting into effect in your own home, and watch the room transform to an innovative living space.
